Tomie – Review

Admit it, we've all had terrible high school experiences, especially in the love-hate-jealousy department, but not all of us took pleasure in cutting off a classmate's head, and dismembering their entire body. However if that were the scenario, how would you feel seeing that classmate return the next day smiling, as if nothing happened. Its safe to say you'd flip your shit, maybe end up in a mental hospital, killing yourself, or perhaps transferring schools and saying nothing at all. After seeing such evil return, most would consider killing them again, but therein lies a problem. No matter what you do, they wont die.

Tsukiko Izumisawa, played by Mami Nakamura (Love Exposure) is one of the twenty seven classmates who didn't go bat shit crazy, and transferred schools. Problem is, her memory of what really happened is completely gone, and believes a car accident is to blame. Poor thing doesn't realize she got to experience the wrath of Tomie Kawakami played by Miho Kanno (Dolls). While Tsukiko attends hypnotherapy almost everyday to find out the truth, Detective Harada played by Tomorowo Taguchi (Strange Circus) is determined to meet Tomie face to face. They're unaware that Tomie is already in town ready to wreak havoc, and she is looking for Tsukiko.

Police are baffled as to why Tomie's name continues to pop up in many unsolved cases, some dating back to the Meiji Period. Though there are many witnesses, even people admitting to killing her first hand, there is no body to be found. Tomie is said to be a beautiful girl with a mole under her eye, and she thrives off the affection of men and anguish of women. Her presence drives them crazy to the point of insanity, causing everyone to kill each other, and sometimes kill her. Who is this Tomie? Better yet, what is she?

Directed by Ataruo Oikawa (Apartment 1303, Tomie :Beginning, Tomie :Revenge) this may be the first film to start the Tomie franchise, it is actually a sequel in the manga series; first published in Japan between 1987 to 2000 by Junji Ito, who won the 1987 Kazuo Umezu Prize for the story. Though the story line is brilliant, dark and slightly gruesome, there are plot holes that could leave the audience wondering what the hell they just watched. Lucky for you American viewers, the manga was released in America back in 1997, perhaps we'll find the answers there. But don't let the missing pieces to the story drive you away. I myself consider this movie a classic, and it's perfect to start off your J-Horror night. You'll certainly get the creeps, and enjoy the unnecessary amount of blood involved.
